Our Very First Pumpkin Carving

Thankfully, this last Wednesday, Tanner had some time off work, so we decided we were going to get pumpkins and carve them.  I came to find out the the idea of 'we' are carving pumpkins really means 'he' is carving the pumpkins.  I discovered only later that this was a good idea because, as you will see, these jack-o-lanterns are quite meticulously made, thanks to my husband who spent more than 3 hours on both of ours.  They are pretty cool...take a look! :)

These were the preliminary sketches...take a good look and see if he did well on the finished product :)

Here, Tanner is drawing the faces on the pumpkins and the first step is complete!

:)  We had so much fun, especially since Tanner doesn't normally get much time off.

Let me explain these close-up shots:  (1) Notice that Tanner's pumpkin has an interesting blemish on his forehead, similar to the scar on the forehead of his Carver.  Ironic?  (2) This triangle under the mouth represents the 'Soul Patch' Tanner now has on his chin.  Himself...in a pumpkin :)

This picture represents about three hours time as Tanner meticulously carved our pumpkins.  He said that his dad used to do it for their family and that he, as the head of our household, would be the official Carver of the Family Pumpkins.

And the pumpkins are complete!  As my eyes would not keep themselves open anymore, Tanner finished!  It was so worth the wait!  They look so awesome!  And very like their original sketches!

And that concludes our Halloween festivities!  We miss everyone so much and hope that these pictures help you get a glimpse into our lives here in Kentucky so it doesn't seem like we're so far away :)

  1. Nice pumpkins. We had to enlarge the picture to see Tanner's soul patch (weak). His pumpkin is also sporting a dimple. The pumpkin's scar is much more gnarly than Tanner's, fortunately. All in all, a good representation. Valinda's, on the other hand, fails to capture her true beauty, but it is cute! Our pumpkin took part in the Honeywell pumpkin carving contest this year. We (Dad and Amanda - Mom was the lighting technician) also shot a safety video. We'll e-mail you a photo. Glad to see you are upholding the Sultze traditions!

  3. Hey Friend,

Jimmy: "They would have a blog."

I miss you sooooooo much Valinda. I am almost glad I don't know when I am going to see you again because if I had to count down to some huge number it would feel like torture. At least this way I never know when I might see you again. Could be tomorrow (hardly unlikely), could be years from now (also highly unlikely). I need to go shopping for some clothes that fit and the only person who I want to come with me is states away :( I'm sorry I have not kept very well in touch since July. You mean so much to me and I am so grateful for the conversations we get to have over the phone and the encouragment you have sent my way. Sorry to make this so sappy...hormones, I'm sure. I cried last week watching extreme home makeover. Never thought I would do that.

Talk to you soon and Happy Halloween.

    Love,
    Sarah
